Des-Pitch-ito: Week 21 (Aug 14 – 20) Two-start pitchers

We are about to hit the halfway mark in August, and the fantasy playoffs are approaching quickly. That means these last few weeks will be vital when trying to make a late season surge for the pennant. Starting pitching will be crucial during this stretch, so make sure your lineups are set and you’re ready to stomp all over the competition.

To help with the planning, here are the projected two start pitchers for Week 21 (Aug 14-20).

*These are based off of current rotations as of August 9th. These are subject to change and will be updated accordingly*

Spotlight

Marco Estrada, TOR – 5.12 ERA – 1.42 WHIP – 134 Ks

Alright, this could actually be a long shot, so play this guy with caution. Marco has been brutal for pretty much the entire season, but over his past two starts he has pitched admirably. In 14 innings he has allowed 4 runs with 3 walks while striking out 12. Now, those numbers don’t exactly jump off the page – but considering one of the games was against the Astros, it could mean Estrada is starting to make a late season push. If you want to roll the dice and play him against the Rays and the Cubs, do so. But don’t blame me if both those games go up in flames.

Danny Salazar, CLE – 4.32 ERA – 1.33 WHIP – 105 Ks

Salazar’s numbers are a little inflated due to his shit performance at the beginning of the season. This eventually led to a DL stint, which was actually a blessing in disguise for Salazar. Since being reactivated, Danny has allowed 3 earned runs on 8 hits and five walks while striking out 28 through 20 innings. These past three starts have made fantasy owners believe in Salazar’s fantasy value again. With a strong contending offense behind him, Danny should be a force the finals week of the season. Start him in all formats.

Kevin Gausman, BAL – 5.15 ERA – 1.62 WHIP – 120 Ks

I made the mistake of wasting a draft pick on Gausman earlier this season when he decided that he didn’t really know how to baseball anymore. Thankfully, he has started to pick up his performance (only took 20 weeks), and he may be worth sliding into the lineup now. In his past 8 starts, Gausman is 5-0 with 58 Ks. In his past 4 outings, he last allowed a grand total of 2 earned runs and has picked up a quality start in each game. Did I mention he has struck out 8 batters in EACH of those 4 games? Gausman is finally playing up to his hype, and it may be safe to play him during certain matchups. Ride the hot streak and play him this week.

I’m looking at using Salazar and Trevor Cahill for my two starts this week. I will be keeping a tab on other pitchers so I can add another start or two to my week though. Check in next Wednesday for the next addition of two week starters!
